One of the most common questions I’m asked is – can I eat carbs?
The diet industry has villainized certain foods, and carbs is one of the most popular villains out there. The diet industry is a 60 billion dollar/year industry that is designed to fail so we keep coming back. Is this who we want to listen to?
So, let me start by saying – carbs are vital to your brain health, hormones & energy levels. If you cut out all the carbs, your body and hormones may panic – which can increase stress hormone imbalances, low energy, cravings – and even weight gain.
Carbs are not an all or nothing thing.
A diet too low in carbs can increase cortisol (a stress hormone) and slow the production of thyroid hormones (you do not want that!).
Extreme carb restricted diets can cause amenorrhea (loss of periods) because women need carbs to ovulate.
Healthy sources of starch activate thyroid hormones, keeps cortisol in check, and provide a good source of food for your GUT.
Too much starch (especially from processed, refined carbs) can worsen insulin resistance, causing brain fog, low energy and weight gain – so balance is vital!
Here are a few of my favourite carbs for your hormones (there are other great ones too!).
✔️ Brown Rice
✔️ Quinoa
✔️ Sweet Potato
✔️ Butternut Squash
✔️ Parsnips
✔️ Carrots
✔️ Berries
✔️ Apples
They can help:
Increase your energy
Reduce PMS and support healthier cycles
Promote healthy weight management
Help get rid of brain fog
So, to answer the question about carbs – YES carbs are ok! Try out some of the foods I listed above, and let me know what you think!
