I want to talk about something I’m having so many Women reach out to me about recently.
Weight loss after 40
Here’s what I’m hearing:
‘I’m so frustrated – everything I used to do that would help me lose weight – doesn’t work anymore.’
‘I just keep gaining even though I’m working out harder than ever, and eating mostly vegetables.’
‘I’m so tired of feeling like this. I just want to feel good in my body again.’
Do any of these sound familiar?
Weight gain is a common symptom that women experience during perimenopause. Even when diet, exercise, and other lifestyle factors remain the same, the number on the scale and the waist measurement can creep up. This change can feel frustrating, scary, and impossible to change.
The root of perimenopause weight gain may be in the natural hormonal changes during this time. Your body needs a different type of support. Instead of focusing on weight, it’s time to focus on hormonal health with targeted lifestyle strategies and possible supplements – not on starving yourself or over exercising (this is important!). Weight loss can come when you have these other supports in place.
So here’s the thing…
As we age, our estrogen and progesterone drop. Progesterone helps us burn fat, and is often one of the reasons why we tend to gain perimenopausal/menopausal weight. We lose muscle mass as our estrogen levels drop, which also affects our metabolism & weight.
On top of this, we may have had years of:
- High stress (and streess hormone imbalances)
- Sleepless nights (months, or years)
- Previous estrogen imbalances (heavy periods, fibroids, migraines, bloating, PMS, or irritability)
- Years of not putting yourself first
And then… we hit our 40’s and it HITS US. And sometimes like a ton of bricks.
The weight comes on, we can’t sleep, we can’t get up in the morning, we can barely make it through the day, our libido is gone, and we don’t recognize the person who looks at us in the mirror each morning.
I want you to know, that no matter how old you are – this DOES NOT HAVE TO BE HOW YOU FEEL.
You CAN get your body back, and feel good again.
You don’t have to spend hours on google, or scour every Facebook group looking for answers.
And you definitely don’t have to jump on every new diet plan, or buy the supplements that you see in the ads. (this can actually lower your metabolism even more right now!)
It’s about having a real plan to support your hormones that have changed since you were in your 20’s and even early 30’s.
It’s about eating foods you enjoy, and having a plan that addresses the hormone changes.

If you have followed me for a while, you will know that I love to give easy tips you can get started on now.
Here are 3 simple things to focus on to help support your hormones & metabolism if you are in perimenopause:
High protein breakfast
This is a big one! Most of the Women I meet aren’t getting enough protein. Protein – especially at breakfast can help support your hormones, reduce cravings, increase energy and boost your metabolism.
Try a high protein smoothie (Try this one), eggs, or stirring a good quality protein powder into your oats or yogurt.
Drink your water
I know it may sound simple, but dehydration impacts your energy, skin, and weight.
I recommend my clients start their day with a glass of lemon water (1/4 – 1/2 of a real lemon squeezed into a glass of warm/room temperature water) and a small pinch of pink himalayan sea salt.
The salt is great if you have a stress hormone imbalance, and can help you absorb the water better.
Try probiotics
A balanced gut microbiome means improved insulin sensitivity, vaginal health, better digestion, and more. They are even doing studies on specific strains of gut bacteria that help with weight loss and maintenance.
Gut health really is key to thriving in perimenopause & beyond. My favourite is the Naka brand.
Entering into perimenopause means finding a new way to connect with, and support your body. Changes WILL happen, but focusing on hormonal health can help you thrive instead of just barely surviving. 💛
